Pike Remembers Michael Jackson
March 27, 1942 - August 30, 2007
One man, more than any other, is responsible for the worldwide renaissance of craft beer and brewing.
It was from Michael Jackson's World Guide to Beer, published in 1977 that we learned about Porter, the foundation of the commercial brewing industry. At the time, there were no-top fermented Porters being brewed in England where the style was introduced. In the 18th century, it became immensely popular, first in London and later, throughout the British Isles; Porterhouses, pubs featuring steak and ale, now remembered only by a cut of beef, were fixtures in colonial America. When Michael Jackson's book was published the only porters available were bottom fermented lagers brewed in the US and Eastern Europe. Inspired by Michael, Charles Finkel approached the oldest brewery in Yorkshire to reintroduce a real "top fermented porter" in 1979. The Famous Taddy Porter was born. Michael, who was from Yorkshire, shared our pride and became a big porter supporter -- not only with Taddy, but as the style became popular, also in the fast growing craft brewing industry. Michael would have loved Pike Pro-Am Porter (please see Pike Press, July 2008); it is now available in our pub and at a few select outlets in Washington State.
While August 30 is the first anniversary of Michael's death, Sunday, September 28 marks the anniversary of the simultaneous worldwide tribute to Michael. A memorial toast held last year in Pike's Microbrewery Museum, brought together beer lovers who gathered to remember Michael and to contribute to research in an effort to find a cure for Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that has been around for thousands of years. It was given a formal name after an early researcher, British physician James Parkinson. The underlying biochemical changes in the brain were identified in the 1950s by Nobel Prize winning Swedish scientist, Arvid Carlsson, whose L-dopa became the most widely used treatment. Who knows when the next great scientist will create a cure? What we do know is that it takes money to support the scientists. Because of your support, Pike was able to send a $1000 check to the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation in Michael's memory.
As a tribute Michael and all he gave back to the beer community, please join us in toasting his memory with Pike Pro-Am Porter. For every pint of Pike Pro-Am Porter sold that day, Pike will donate 100% of the proceeds to the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation. If you'd prefer a different tipple, just drop a donation in the dedicated growler on the bar. Let's see how many growlers we can fill! Please help Pike by contributing to the N.W. Parkinson's Foundation.
