Not many brewers can say that they started brewing in first grade, but our Head Brewer Art Dixon can. He was only 7 when his grandfather, who was a homebrewer, got him to help out by prepping and bottling his brews. By the time Art was 11 he’d learned enough to create his own homebrew and had made his first port wine by the time he was 16.

Art turned professional at 20, going to work for Seattle’s Pyramid Brewery as a brewer and production worker. He spent 13 years brewing there, the last 6 as head brewer. During this time he collected his share of GABF medals, including golds for his Hefeweizen and Crystal Weizen. He left Pyramid after building a 15 barrel pilot system, parts of it by hand, so they could experiment with brewing styles.

It was Pike XXXXX Stout that caught Art’s attention and brought him to Pike Brewing Company in 2011. He found the beer inspired and it convinced him to bring his experience and passion for trying new things to our brewery. We’re thrilled that he did, as Art has designed some of Pike Brewing Company’s most sought after beers, including Pike Space Needle IPA and Pike Pils.

As Pike Brewing Company’s lead brewer, Art sets the course for our 30 barrel brewery and 8 person brewery team. Every day he works to ensure that Pike Brewing’s core offerings are of consistently high quality while tinkering away at new recipes for experimental brews. And he never misses an opportunity to teach others about brewing craft beer; a knack he likely picked up from his grandfather.
